For International Women’s Day we are celebrating the life of the palaeontologist Mary Anning (1799 – 1847). She lived at a time when women of the lower classes had little access to good education, but despite this and many financial hardships she gained incredible knowledge about fossils, and became famous for her discoveries and skills. She was known to all the influential geologists of the time who often sought her advice. Her many discoveries leave a lasting memorial to this incredible woman whose story is an inspiration to all.

Last year a statue of Mary Anning was erected looking out to sea in the area she used to go fossil hunting. This was the result of a national campaign started by a local schoolgirl who was dismayed that there wasn’t one in her hometown of Lyme Regis.  On display at National Museum Cardiff until the 27th March 2023 we have the mini statue of Mary and her dog, Tray, made by artist Denise Dutton to test her idea for the full-size version.

This session will be held in English.
